About Los Tilos Natural Reserve

Located on the northeastern slopes of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Los Tilos Natural Reserve is a protected area that preserves one of the last remnants of the island’s original laurel forest (laurisilva). This misty, subtropical forest thrives in a humid climate shaped by the trade winds, creating an emerald canopy rich with endemic plant species including laurels, ferns, and mosses. The reserve encompasses steep ravines and deep valleys with crystal-clear streams flowing through them, providing vital water sources that sustain the complex ecosystem. Los Tilos was declared a Natural Reserve in 1983 and is part of the larger Canary Islands Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO for its ecological significance.

Visitors can explore a well-maintained network of hiking trails that wind through the dense forest to scenic viewpoints overlooking dramatic cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. Notable attractions include the famous Cascada de los Tilos waterfall and several natural pools. The area’s biodiversity includes numerous bird species such as the Canary warbler and laurel pigeon, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Interpretive signage along the trails educates visitors about the forest’s ecology, geology, and conservation efforts. The mild subtropical climate ensures pleasant visiting conditions year-round, though the best time to experience the lush greenery is during the wetter autumn and winter months. Los Tilos Natural Reserve offers immersive outdoor recreation in a rare and well-preserved environment, combining natural beauty, tranquility, and ecological importance on one of Spain’s most charming islands.
